“The Common Good and Hamilton’s Downtown Neighbourhoods”
I became interested in this issue after being part of a movement that opposed the building of a casino in Hamilton’s downtown neighbourhoods. I had the sense that while people were saying “no” to the casino, there was a “yes” to something else: a vision for the common good for the neighbourhood. I discovered that people were asking, “if we saved downtown from the casino, did we save it for gentrification and profit for speculators?”
This paper was the result of qualitative research that I did in the community.
